On April 29, 2026, the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) welcomed 25 Women in STEM students from Longwood High School for an immersive, day-long program introducing the students to computational science
and programming. The initiative was supported by a Presidential Mini-Grant through the Office of DI3, led by Judith Brown Clarke.
The program offered students hands-on STEM workshops and opportunities to engage directly with faculty and industry professionals. Participants were introduced to foundational concepts in computational science through an interactive Python programming session led by Saajid Chowdhury (Department of Physics and Astronomy), IACS Graduate Fellow Khanak Bhargava (Department of Physics and Astronomy) and Han Li (Department of Linguistics).
In addition to technical training, Dr. Jennifer McCauley, IACS Educational Programs Manager, facilitated a career development workshop designed
to help students explore pathways that integrate their personal interests with potential
STEM careers. The session encouraged students to think expansively about their futures
and the diverse opportunities available within STEM fields.
