This summer IACS hosted the second cohort of Data + Computing = Discovery! (DCD), its NSF-funded research experience for undergraduate students (REU) program. Eight students from across the country came together to learn about careers, opportunities, skills, and research in computational and data science and engineering. The students explored the application of computational resources to open questions in sociology, chemistry, computer science, applied math, and atmospheric science, observing computational commonalities that span many disciplines. Professional development programs were also part of the summer, including practice for technical communications, tips for graduate school applications, challenges in managing work and life, and others. If you are, or know, an undergraduate student who would be interested in participating, DCD will begin recruiting for summer 2023 this fall. Please check the website (iacs.stonybrook.edu/dcd) for more information, possible research projects, application materials, and deadlines.
