Christian Luhmann holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Northeastern University and
a Ph.D. in Psychology from Vanderbilt University. He is currently an Associate Professor
in Stony Brook University's Department of Psychology and an affiliate of the Institute
for Advanced Computational Science and the Center for Behavioral Political Economy.
His interdisciplinary background leads him to take a uniquely computational approach
to behavioral science, seeking to formulate and evaluate formal theories of human
behavior. Much of his work has been undertaken within the field of behavioral economics,
quantitatively characterizing how human decisions trade off monetary outcomes against
dimensions such as uncertainty and delay. His more recent work has begun to investigate
complex behavioral at scale, including processes such as social influence and the
diffusion of information. He has also taken computational approaches to neuroscientific
data (e.g., electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging). His computational work has employed a variety techniques, including agent-based
simulation, approximate Bayesian inference, machine learning, and network theory.
