Research Scientist

Required Qualification: (As evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral degree (Foreign equivalent or higher degree) in any scientific or engineering discipline, including computer science and applied mathematics. Three years of full-time research experience in any scientific or engineering discipline, to include at least one year of professional experience following attainment of a doctoral degree.

Preferred Qualification:
Previous experience in education and training, including preparation of materials. Previous experience with high-performance scientific or engineering computing. Expertise in at least one of the following: Fortran, C, or C++. 

Brief Description of Duties:  
Stony Brook University has a Research Scientist position available in the Division of Information Technology- Research Computing, Informatics & Innovation (RCI 2 ) to enable and support research operations performed by faculty and students at both Stony Brook University and national/international universities, which can include conducting independent and collaborative research.

The incumbent will work both independently and as part of a team and will ensure that all activities and research protocols follow the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University.  The incumbent will assist in the execution of large projects in scientific computing, and over time will assume leadership of major project elements. This position is for a user-facing computational scientist familiar with High-performance computing and scientific applications. This person will assist users in the porting and tuning of their applications and act as the frontline for user support. The person will prepare materials for training, hold both in-person and online workshops, gather materials and data, and prepare reports for internal use and for reporting to NSF. This person will liaise with XSEDE for the effective operation of the national resource. 

  • Preparing training materials and executing in-person and online workshops. Supervise, plan, organize, and evaluate the activities of others, including postdoctoral associates, research support positions, and graduate assistants. Maintain all laboratory records consistent with University policy
  • Collecting and analyzing data, writing reports, and associated presentations. Plan, design, and implement research experiments to achieve research objective(s).
  • Preparation of papers for publications, presentation of results in scientific conferences, workshops, and seminars. Oversee the preparation of grant proposals and the application of grants. Collaborate with members of scientific communities, both nationally and internationally.
  • Scientific user support.  Other duties as assigned.

Senior Research Scientist

Special Notes:
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation.  Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
